Darkest Era/Gospelheim – The Black Heart, London – 23.11.23

Thursday night in London, so what better to do than going to the Black Heart to see a band we hadn’t watched in twelve years? Yeah, more than a decade ago we saw Darkest Era in Lisbon alongside the Russians Arkona plus Dalriada and Trollfest, in a very interesting night!!  So, of course we wanted to see them again!! 

So, me, Ines and Galas (one other Portuguese friend that joins us sometimes in our adventures) met at the Black Heart and started the night with a nice Lightbulb, a very good pale ale from Verdant Brewery. Unfortunately, when we went upstairs to the venue, we saw that it was not going to be a very crowded house. In fact, we and one other guy were the only ones in there, a bit before Gospelheim had to start. And I think maybe that affected a bit the mood, and the show from the Manchester band!! Down to a trio with Ricardo and Coco sharing vocals, the band went through their debut album, ‘Ritual & Repetition’, with some hiccups but relentlessly. Luckily more people showed up, although I wouldn’t put it above 30, while the band was charging at us with their mix of Gothic Rock and Metal, maybe on a vein close to Moonspell or one other Portuguese band, which goes by the name of Divine Lust.  My favourite track was ‘Satan Blues’, a song with a hell of a beat and an instrumental one which I didn’t catch the name. I was hoping to buy the album but when we came upstairs (with one more Lightbulb to clench our thirst) the merch and the band had disappeared!! Maybe they were working the next day, so totally understood. I hope I can catch them a next time as a quartet and see how it goes!!!

After them, and maybe with the house with 40 to 50 people, Darkest Era arrived on stage, and it was nice to see that the band was pretty much the same that we saw in Portugal (and then interviewed on issue #12)!! And they had the same energy and contagious music!! Although of course, this time, they were promoting their third and most recent album, ‘Wither on the Vibe’, released in 2022 by Candlelight Records. The new songs are as Heavy and melodic as you can expect, but also with tinges of Black and Doom Metal, bringing to mind some influences from the mighty Bathory (which can never be a bad thing) or their mates from the South, Primordial. ‘Floodlands’ is a good example, and it was one of the hits of this show. The guitars were heavy as hell, Krum vocals on the spot (and with a great interaction with the audience) and the rhythm section very tight, especially on the faster tempos. They didn’t forget the oldies and played stuff like ‘An Ancient Fire Burns’ or ‘The Morrigan (which ended the show in a very epic mood) from their debut, ‘The Last Caress of Light’ or ‘Songs of Gods and Men’ from its follower ‘Severance’. A great show from a band that deserved more audience (I know it was almost the end of the month so maybe not a lot of money floating around) and also a bit more recognizance from the Metal scene. 

Then Woody’s for a nice chicken meat & chips, home and some sleep as the next day was a working one plus the beginning of Beyond the Grave also at The Black Heart!!! But that will be for a next one!!!

Harakiri for the Sky + Ellende + Fen - The Underworld, London - 14.11.2023

Cult of Parthenope which is behind one of the most riveting festivals in London: Cosmic Void (and one other which will be coming this next spring called Celestial Darkness) decided to present us with a show from three bands that played last year’s Cosmic Void!! And as expected it was a hell of a journey (a word I will be using heavily in this review), which a lot of people also witnessed because the Underworld was way packed for a Tuesday night!! We got there a bit before the opening and there was a fairly big queue to get in. Fortunately, things were working fine at the door, so we got in with plenty of time to have a cold Pale Ale before the opening act. 

And that opening act was one of the reasons why we were there!! UK’s FEN is back with their seventh album, ‘Monuments to Absence’, released last July through Prophecy Productions, so this was more than a chance to see them once more and listen to some of the new album tracks played live. Due to personal reasons, Grungyn, Fen’s original bass player couldn’t make it, so in came S. Vrath (from Scythian, Craven Idol fame) to hold the axe!! And must say, he did it very well, bringing his enthusiastic and intense presence to the stage. Fen’s music for me is quite difficult to describe as they go through so many different influences, and that’s one thing, that makes their shows so good!! There’s melancholy, blast beats, growls, clean passages, clean vocals and a myriad of riffs being displayed by founding member The Watcher!! It’s a journey through a tempestuous sea of feelings, moods and riffs. As expected, they played a couple of songs from the album, including ‘Scouring Ignorance’, one of the fastest tracks that night, and I would say in Fen’s discography!! One of those songs where JG blasts his way through and The Watcher’s harsh vocals rule!! The only thing I struggled this night in their set were the clean vocals, which sounded a bit lower than the rest but overall, this was another triumphant night for a band which doesn’t have much to prove!!!

Then time to go quickly to the bar for another Pale Ale, and for my surprise that was basically the only offer on tap as all others were pretty much empty!! I think the Underworld needs to stock a bit more the rest of the beer taps. And then time for the other reason for my presence in this gig: Ellende!! The Austrians were for me, the revelation of the 2022 Cosmic Void with a mesmerizing show that kept me glued to the Electric Ballroom stage. And this night, they delivered a torrent of suffering and melancholic Black Metal which resonated with the day we had had in London: cold, rainy, and miserable!! The next hour was a journey through their records, as I think they played old stuff like ‘Rückzug In Die Innerlichkeit’ or ‘Der Letze ‘Marsch’ but also songs from their most recent album, ‘Ellenbogengesellschaft’, like ‘Freier Fall’ or ‘Hand aufs Herz’. I’m not 100% sure as I was more interested in riding the tidal waves of DSBM unleashed by Ellende, than trying to figure what songs they were playing!! Honestly, when I listen to their records, there’s not one song that stands out but more the entire record that controls you, while being played!! Live, the experience is pretty much like that as well!! A steady thundering of despairing wails, sad hypnotic melodic riffs intertwined with some more brutal ones, the cadence of the drums felt in your heart!! It’s harsh and beautiful at the same time and when it ended, it was like coming out of a trance!! 

Finally came on stage HARAKIRI FOR THE SKY, a band which we saw for the first time in 2016 in Portugal and that, at that time, made quite an impression on me, especially with ‘Calling the Rain’, a song that to this day still gives me the goosebumps!! After Ellende, and another Pale Ale, it was a bit difficult to get in the right mood for them!! As their countrymates, they went through some of their discography and not leaning heavily into the most recent one, ‘Mære’, which came out in 2021. Their set was also an enjoying trip, although I felt a bit drained, so it took me a while to engage in the screaming vocals (which I thought were a bit low when compared with the rest of the instruments), the melodic riffs and the excellent drum work. They got a great reaction from the audience which is a testimony to their quality and the hour and around fifteen minutes that their concert lasted passed quite decently. And yes, they played (pretty much in the end) ‘Calling the Rain’ and I enjoyed it as much as ever!!! The final song playing when the show was over was also a must: ‘Mad World’ the Gary Jules version (and one Harakiri for the Sky covers in the remake of their second album ‘Aokigahara’, released last year). 

Overall, it was a very enjoyable evening, with three excellent acts, good sound (as pretty much always in the Underworld) and one more good event for the good people of Cult of Parthenope!!! See you on the 30th for Hulder and Groza plus The Infernal Sea and Stahlsarg at the Boston Music Room!!!

 

Before posting about the new issue of Metal Horde Zine, I wanted to address some logistic difficulties we are facing. As in other countries, postage prices went up and are a bit of an effort in a DIY publication like Metal Horde Zine, so that you are aware to send a copy of the fanzine to other European countries will cost 4.25 pounds, while 2 to 3 copies will cost 5.25 pounds. All this to say that we will try to find different solutions so that people that has followed us throughout the years, don't get burned because of prices. 

Some of those solutions will be pass by sending a couple of issues together, instead of just one, or to send more than 1 copy of the zine, or to find a point of contact in the country to sell the zine, like we already did in Portugal. If anyone is interested, let me know and we can discuss that.

As for the first one, to anyone interested, you can request the reservation of issue 28 and I will ship it to you when the 29 is out (which will happen before May/June 2022 as it's already in the works) and for example in that case instead of paying twice 7 euros for each package you would pay 10 euros for both zines with postage included. You can choose to help us by paying in advance or just reserve and pay when the two issues are shipped to you, we are more than ok with both ways. Also to say that anyone that opts for this, will receive an extra item, which can be one other fanzine, cd's or tapes.

On the 2nd solution, if you want to grab a couple of copies (beside your own) of issue 28 to sell in your area, just let me know and we can think of something!!

Plenty of NWOBHM influences mixed with US Hard’n’Heavy and a must for all into the sub-genres mentioned!! ‘Stuck in the USA’ or ‘Closer to the Blade’ are two of the highlights from this debut EP of Professor Black.

VOA Rocks - 1º dia - 04.08.17

Mais um ano e mais uma presença no VOA Rocks!! Este ano dividido em 3 dias e com 2 palcos, o festival fazia alinhar 24 bandas das quais 12 Portuguesas!! Uma boa aposta no nosso mercado e que, para mim, fez valer a pena!! Devido a questões profissionais (infelizmente viver de reportagens, entrevistas e críticas é impossível) perdi os Process of Guilt que abriram o festival no dia 04!! Esperava assim começar com a 1ª banda do palco secundário, mas devido ao calor e às poucas condições desse palco (um toldo pelo menos poderia ajudar os executantes a manterem-se mais resguardados do sol), os concertos, nesse palco, foram adiados para horas mais decentes e assim a 1ª banda que vi foram os Holandeses The Charm The Fury! A banda liderada pela simpática Caroline Westendorp apresentou-se, pela 1ª vez no nosso país, debaixo de um sol bastante castigador mas manteve a postura e debitaram um som poderoso que fez lembrar a tempos Arch Enemy mas também bastante Pantera!! Aproveitaram para mostrar o seu 2º álbum 'The Sick, Dumb & Happy', que saiu em Março pela Nuclear Blast, e muito através da voz da vocalista e da sua presença lá foram puxando pelo público que desafiou o deus Rá!! Depois de finalizada a prestação dos The Charm The Fury, tempo para a primeira aparição no tal palco secundário!! E calhou aos Névoa abrirem as hostilidades!! Quem os conhece e já os viu ao vivo, sabe que esta banda nortenha cria uma atmosfera bastante claustrofóbica e pesada nos seus concertos, e a verdade é que mesmo debaixo de 35º graus e com um sol radiante, eles não desmotivaram e mostraram porque são uma das bandas mais promissoras da cena nacional!! As guitarras são talvez o maior ponto de equilíbrio dos Névoa, umas vezes mais calmas e outras vezes completamente desvairadas, na maior parte das vezes mantendo o público em stand-by pois nunca se sabe o que se segue, talvez como um filme de suspense em que nunca sabemos quando aparecerá o twist final!! Quem não os conhecia, passou a conhecer e a esperar por uma nova aparição deles, desta vez num qualquer sitio ermo e desolado onde a atmosfera pesada se faça sentir!!  De volta ao palco maior e hora para os Finlandeses Insomnium, que foram mais uns a sofrer da radiante aparição do nosso astro maior (não, não é o Cristiano Ronaldo mas sim o sol para os mais incautos)!! O veterano (já lá vão 20 anos) quarteto nórdico baseou a sua actuação no novo àlbum 'Winter's Gate', saído em 2016 pela Century Media e penso, não tenho a certeza, que o tocaram mesmo na integra!! O Melo Death deles é bastante bom e mostraram um grande à vontade em palco, fruto de muitos anos na estrada!! Não sendo uma das minhas bandas favoritas do género, foi no entanto um concerto bastante agradável de observar enquanto se bebia umas cervejas fesquinhas!! A seguir vieram os nacionais Earth Drive mas não posso dizer grande coisa pois a fome apertou e aproveitei esse bocado para comer qualquer coisa!! Do que vi e ouvi soou-me a um interessante Stoner Rock com algumas boas ideias!! Tempo então para os Epica e a minha 1ª vez a ver esta banda Holandesa!! No final fiquei com a ideia que tocaram um pouco demais e que se tornou um pouco chato para o fim!! Abriram com 2 ou 3 faixas do novo álbum, 'The Holographic Principle' mas não esqueceram o passado tocando por exemplo 'Sensorium' que pertence ao 1ª álbum de 2003 ou 'Consign to Oblivion' do 2º àlbum e com o qual fecharam o concerto!! A voz de Simone Simons é uma (senão a maior) mais valia da banda mas destaco também uma excelente prestação do teclista!! Sempre muito simpática com o público e numa excelente forma a banda deixou os seus muitos fãs deleitados com mais esta prestação no nosso país!!  De volta ao palco Loud tive a maior surpresa da noite com a actuação dos The Black Wizards!! Não conhecia este jovem quarteto que debitou um grande groove de 70’s Hard Rock numa boa mistura de Cream, Led Zeppelin e Black Sabbath!! Fiquei fã é só o que posso dizer!!  Desde a voz mais roufenha da vocalista/guitarrista, ás excelentes linhas de baixo e à forma desenfreada e, ás vezes, violenta que a baterista aplica estes jovens têm tudo para se tornar algo mais e darem cartas por esse mundo fora!!  Impossível não abanar a cabeça ou bater o pé durante a actuação deles!!!  Longo ia o dia mas para mim ainda faltava a atracção maior ou seja os Carcass!! E o veterano quarteto Inglês deu um concerto curtinho mas suficiente pois nem sempre maior é melhor!! Como se esperava abriram com o último álbum editado, ‘Surgical Steel’ de 2013 mas não faltaram as habituais como ‘Buried Dreams’, ‘Corporal Jigsore Quandary’, ‘Exhume to Consume’ ou ‘Heartwork’!! O vocalista e baixista Jeff Walker foi o normal, comunicativo qb e mais uma vez os Carcass mostraram como se faz bom Death Metal sem muitas merdices!!! Depois hora de ir para casa pois Sábado era dia de trabalho e mais um dia de VOA!!!!

Lux Ferre/Irae/Solveig – RCA Club, 08.07.16 (por Nuno Oliveira)

Mais uma ida ao RCA desta vez para ver uma das poucas passagens dos Lux Ferre pelos palcos do nosso burgo. Sendo uma banda conhecida por não dar assim tantos concertos, sempre que aparece a oportunidade, não a podemos perder. E assim numa noite quente de Julho lá se foi até ao clube Lisboeta para presenciar mais uma devastação por parte do conjunto Português, hoje em dia com grande parte da formação radicada no Algarve, desta vez acompanhados pelos Irae e Solveig! Primeiro facto a constatar nesta excelente noite, foi a boa quantidade de amantes das trevas que saíram de casa para se deslocar ao RCA. Depois de meter a conversa em dia com muita gente conhecida e refrescar a garganta com umas boas cervejas, hora do mais importante, os concertos. Primeira banda a subir ao palco do RCA foram os SOLVEIG banda que até então eu desconhecia mas da qual já tinha ouvido algumas boas coisas. E deixem-me vos dizer já, que foram uma boa surpresa! Praticantes de um Black Metal que vai beber bastante à vertente Nórdica, este quinteto de Almada deu um espectáculo muito bom com especial menção para o baixista (que se ouvia bastante bem) e para o vocalista que apresentou um registo bastante diversificado, intervalando os habituais shrieks ligados a este género musical com alguns growls e até algumas vozes mais limpas, num registo à lá Primordial! Tocaram cerca de meia hora, que se passou bastante bem e mostraram que são um nome a recordar no futuro! Depois desta excelente descarga sonora, não houve grande tempo para descanso pois após um breve intervalo, os IRAE, comandados pelo carisma do seu fundador Vulturius, desta vez acompanhado pelo JD (Göatfukk, Corpus Christii, etc) no baixo e pelo JS (Vae Solis, Alchemist, etc) na bateria, subiram ao palco para difundir o seu ódio pela humanidade! Talvez um dos melhores projectos dentro da cena Black Metal Portuguesa, os Irae nunca desiludem e desta vez não foi diferente. Músicas como ‘A Ira Nasce nas Noites de Sintra’, ‘Prime Evil Black Metal’, ‘Queima as Casas de Deus’ ou ‘Fátima em Ruína’ foram autênticos hinos à destruição, servidos por uma banda que mostrou grande coesão em palco com relevo para o baterista JS que é um portento na bateria!! Quem goste de Black Metal raw e in your face não pode perder a hipótese de os ver quando a mesma se proporcione! Para terminar a noite faltava os cabeça de cartaz, de seu nome LUX FERRE! Sendo uma banda que já acompanhamos há muito tempo, para aí desde os tempos da 1ª demo ‘Wicked Riffs of War’ de 2002, altura em que a banda residia na totalidade na minha terra natal, Vila Franca de Xira, é sempre com altas expectativas que assisto a um ritual deles, e mais umas vez eles não decepcionaram. Quando a banda subiu ao palco a primeira surpresa da noite foi ver o Pestilens de regresso à guitarra (devido a afazeres profissionais ele não se encontra no nosso país)! Depois foi levar com uma bujarda de grandes malhas que nos deixou a todos siderados! Estando a promover o seu mais recente trabalho ‘Excaecatio Lux Veritatis’, lançado o ano passado pela Altare Productions, a banda não se rogou a tocar algumas coisas mais antigas como ‘Pira’ ou ‘Next to Satan’ mas foi com faixas como ‘A Luz Ofuscante Da Verdade’, ‘Caos no Meu Sangue’ ou ‘A Lenta Adaga da Morte’ que os Lux Ferre mostraram a todos os presentes o caminho pelo qual eles agora trilham! Um caminho onde as guitarras de Pestilens e Vilkacius constroem as muralhas sonoras que são percorridas pela voz dilacerante do Devasth, que mais uma vez mostrou ser um monstro em cima do palco! Resumindo: grande noite de Black Metal com 3 bandas cada uma dentro de um registo diferente. Destes podem vir muitos mais!!!

Ravensire + Midnight Priest - 30.06.16 - Stairway Bar, Cascais (por Nuno Oliveira)

Os Midnight Priest vão percorrer a Europa numa tour que lhes vai ocupar o mês de Julho mas antes de arrancarem lembraram-se de se despedir dos fãs Portugueses. Para tal arranjou-se um concerto no Stairway Club em Cascais e juntou-se os Ravensire à festa. Assim combinei com o Diogo ‘EU’ uma jantarada antes na zona de Cascais e lá fomos nós para o Stairway, isto depois de eu me ter perdido durante uma boa meia hora pela encantadora cidade de Cascais. Depois de refastelados pela janta e por vermos a selecção Portuguesa empatar mais um jogo, lá nos dirigimos para o Stairway naquela de apanhar o 1º concerto que começava às 22H e digo começava pois quando chegámos lá estava ainda tudo fechado! E porquê? Porque ainda se jogava o prolongamento do jogo (que depois ainda foi para os penáltis)! Assim apanhamos boleia a pé dos amigos Kepler e Nuno Barreiras e lá fomos a uma lojinha buscar ‘litrosas’ de Super Bock para matar a sede!! 45 minutos depois do que supostamente estava marcado lá começaram os concertos (pelo que soube depois, e porque fiz o obséquio de fazer esse reparo ás bandas, o problema não foi bem deles mas pronto) e sendo uma 5ª feira com algumas pessoas, como eu, a terem de trabalhar no dia a seguir cedo, digamos que não foi das melhores coisas para acontecer. Depois fico admirado quando oiço que a malta vai pouco a concertos de semana em Portugal, hum porque será? No entanto o Stairway esteve muito bem composto, com algumas caras conhecidas a marcarem presença no evento. Agora vamos ao que interessa, as bandas e os concertos. Originalmente eram também para tocar os Leather Synn mas os mesmos tiveram que cancelar e por isso o cartaz ficou apenas com 2 nomes!! Primeiro, subiram ao palco os RAVENSIRE, que continuam a promover o seu 2º álbum ‘The Cycle Never Ends’, do qual tocaram 3 ou 4 temas mas lembraram também os 1ºs trabalhos com músicas como ‘Drawing the Sword’ e ‘Iron Pits’ do álbum de estreia e uma versão curta de ‘Stay True, Stand Tall’ do 1º EP! Uma boa actuação dos Lisboetas e onde se vai vendo cada vez mais entrosado o novo guitarrista Mário Figueira! O som estava bastante bom, pelo menos para fora do palco, e foi mais uma actuação cheia de vigor e suor por parte dos Ravensire!! A chama do Heavy Metal está bem entregue a bandas como eles!! Depois de um pequeno intervalo hora de entrar em palco para os MIDNIGHT PRIEST! A banda de Coimbra (apesar de hoje em dia já ter malta que vem de outros lados tais como o vocalista Lex Thunder (que penso ser de Cascais, logo estava a jogar em casa (aproveitando a gíria da bola))) voltou a mostrar que é uma máquina bem oleada e deram um excelente concerto para deleite de todos os presentes!! Ouviram-se algumas malhas antigas como a obrigatória ‘Rainha da Magia Negra’, ‘À Boleia com o Diabo’ ou a surpreendente ‘O Conde’ para fechar o concerto mas nunca deixando o segundo trabalho ‘Midnight Steel’ de lado!! ‘Hellbreaker’ é sempre uma grande malha para tocar ao vivo!! Com tempo o novo vocalista vai conquistando o seu espaço e já não o vejo como um corpo estranho quando a banda está em palco! Mesmo as malhas em Português já não soam tão estranhas! Final de mais uma noite onde se juntou pessoal velho conhecido para mais uns copos e ver o bom Heavy Metal que se faz no nosso país e desejar aos Midnight Priest uma boa viagem e boa tour!!! Venham mais noites destas!!
